Abdominal Hysterectomy

An abdominal hysterectomy is a very common procedure which accounts for most of the hysterectomies performed in the United States. Dr. Armity, located in Scottsdale, Arizona, is an expert in performing the abdominal hysterectomy procedure.

With an abdominal hysterectomy, the surgeon will make an incision in the abdomen through which the uterus and other reproductive organs (if necessary) will be removed. Hysterectomies performed this way are easier for the doctor because it leaves more room. An abdominal hysterectomy also requires a longer recovery time.

A hysterectomy is the usual treatment for women with uterine, ovarian, or cervical cancer; severe endometriosis; fibroid tumors that are causing bleeding and other complications; or heavy, uncontrollable vaginal bleeding. There are various types of abdominal hysterectomy procedures. The types of abdominal hysterectomies are total, partial, and radical.

The total hysterectomy is the most common type of hysterectomy performed. A total abdominal hysterectomy will involve the removal of the uterus and cervix. A total abdominal hysterectomy is usually preformed to treat uterine and/or cervical cancer.

A partial hysterectomy is another common type of hysterectomy surgery which involves the removal of the uterus only. The partial abdominal hysterectomy is commonly performed for abnormal bleeding, fibroids, and pelvic pain.

Another type of abdominal hysterectomy is called a radical hysterectomy. This type of hysterectomy is performed for advanced cases of cervical or endometrial cancer, where the cancer has spread to the cervix. A radical hysterectomy removes the uterus, cervix, ovaries, oviducts, fallopian tubes, top part of the vagina, lymph nodes, and lymph channels.
